Why we built VanLife Connect
I’m Gavin, the founder of VanLife Connect. My wife Tanya and I are travelling Australia by caravan, and the idea for VanLife Connect came from our own experiences along the way. When we set off, we already had plenty of ways to work out where to go, where to stay and how to get there. What we found harder was what happened after we arrived.
We’d pull into a new place and often know very little about the travelling community around us. What was happening nearby? Was there someone around who could help with something we needed? Were people we’d met earlier in the trip staying just down the road?
That was the gap that eventually led to VanLife Connect.
What we kept noticing
The further we travelled, the more we noticed the same thing. There was a lot happening around us, but no easy way to see it.
We’d meet people we genuinely got along with, then head in different directions and often lose touch.
Useful local information was scattered across Facebook groups, campground noticeboards, social media and word of mouth.
There were travellers all around us with useful skills and experience, but unless you happened to meet the right person, you’d never know.
And sometimes someone we’d met weeks earlier could be staying nearby without either of us realising it.,
Every time we rolled into a new camp, it felt like starting from scratch. The information was usually out there somewhere. The people were there too. What was missing was a simple way to bring the relevant things together around where you were staying.
The Idea Behind Vanlife Connect
VanLife Connect didn’t come from one big lightbulb moment. The idea developed as we travelled and kept running into the same situations.
We started asking a simple question: what if arriving somewhere new didn’t mean starting from scratch?
What if you could arrive and quickly see what was happening around you, find useful help nearby, or reconnect with people you’d already met on the road?
Not another app for planning the trip. Something designed for the part that comes next.
That became VanLife Connect.
Building VanLife Connect
We built VanLife Connect around that arrival moment.
It isn’t intended to replace the apps travellers already use to plan routes, find campsites or decide where to go next. Those apps already do those jobs well.
VanLife Connect has a different purpose: helping you get more from a place once you’re there.
The app brings that together through three connected areas — Services, Community and Travel Mates — with Smart Arrival™ helping surface what’s relevant around you when you check in.

Planning where to go matters. Finding a good place to stay matters. We use those tools ourselves.
