How to Earn Money While Travelling Australia in a Caravan

Mark and Helen are travelling around Australia in their caravan. They have no fixed home base and plan to complete the Big Lap over 18 months. Mark is a semi-retired electrician. Helen has experience in bookkeeping and admin.

They are not looking for full-time employment. They simply want the ability to earn occasionally to:

  • Cover fuel costs
  • Offset caravan park fees
  • Stay longer in places they love
  • Maintain flexibility

They want income that fits around travel, not the other way around.

In theory, Mark’s skills should make this easy. In practice, it hasn’t been.

At previous stops, Mark has posted in local Facebook groups, pinned a note on campground noticeboards and told a neighbours he was available. Sometimes it worked. Often it didn’t. The problems were consistent:

  • People didn’t see his post in time
  • He repeated the same explanations about qualifications
  • Payment was awkward to discuss
  • There was no lasting review history
  • When they moved on, everything reset

Every new town meant starting again. The biggest frustration was timing and location.

He might pull into a park where two or three vans genuinely needed electrical help — but unless someone mentioned it over a campfire, he would never know. At other stops, he would post that he was available, only to realise the couple who needed help had left that morning. The problem was not demand. It was visibility at the right moment.

His skills were valuable. Travellers needed help. But without location-aware timing, the connection depended on luck.

So instead of earning naturally as they travelled, Mark had to actively “hunt” for work. That effort disrupted the rhythm of travel.

Mark and Helen pull into a caravan park near Geraldton for a five-night stay. Because location permissions are enabled, Smart Arrival detects the campground automatically and activates that location inside the app.

Mark receives a prompt: “You’ve arrived at Sunset Coast Park. Check in?” He taps Check In.

He Chooses What to Activate

After checking in, Mark sees his existing service listings and selects:

✔ Caravan Electrical Checks
✔ Minor Repairs

He sets availability for the next five days. Nothing goes live unless he chooses it. He stays in control.

What Happens Next

Once activated, Mark’s services appear in Available Services Nearby

Other travellers in the same campground can see:

  • His qualifications
  • Clear pricing
  • Reviews from previous jobs
  • Availability during this stay

On day two, another couple have inverter issues. They open the app and see Mark listed nearby. They:

  1. Message him
  2. Confirm the job
  3. Book a time
  4. Pay securely in-app

Mark completes the job. Payment is processed. Both leave a review.

When they leave Geraldton, his check-in ends and his services deactivate automatically for that campground.

The Outcome

Mark completes two small jobs during their stay that covers caravan park fees, diesel for the next leg, a meal out.

He did not chase work. He simply made himself available where he was.

That is the design intent – arrival is automatic, activation is intentional, earning stays flexible.
